How to Store Plush Toys (Without Ruining Them)

How to Store Plush Toys (Without Ruining Them)

Plush toys have a way of multiplying. One becomes five, and before you know it, there’s not a single room in the house that isn’t occupied by several stuffed animals and dolls.

When left out, soft toys can become magnets for dust, dirt and germs. Storing them properly is the best way to keep them safe and secure until their next play session. Today, we’ll explore how to store plush toys without ruining them.

The golden rule: never compress plush toys

The single most important thing you can do when storing a plush toy is to prevent compressing it under weight for an extended period of time. Compression causes the filling to compact and fibres to flatten.

The toy will be much more difficult to bring back to life, and you may find that some of that softness doesn’t always come back. Whatever storage method you choose, make sure you give toys room to breathe.

Best storage options for plush toys

The best ways to store your child’s plush toys include:

  • Open shelving: The best option for toys that are still regularly played with is open shelves. Displaying the toys ensures they’re still played with and helps your child learn the importance of tidying up after themselves.

  • Net hammock: A corner hammock can be hung on the walls to store soft toys off the floor without compressing them. Children can still get the toys they want to play with without having to move heavy boxes or open plastic bags.

  • Large open toy baskets: A deep basket works well for toys that are played with regularly and rotated often. Wicker and cotton rope baskets allow air to circulate better than solid plastic.

  • Cotton storage bags: For toys being stored longer term, breathable cotton bags are far better than plastic. Cotton allows airflow, preventing mildew and odour over time.

What to avoid when storing plush toys

It’s equally important to avoid certain things when storing plush toys, such as:

  • Sealed, airtight plastic bags: These trap moisture and compress the toy, which can damage the toy’s fabric and fibres when used for a long time

  • Plastic tubs: While these are commonly used, they lack airflow and encourage compression.

  • Damp or humid spaces: Garages, basements and bathrooms aren’t suitable for plush toy storage, as moisture can cause irreversible damage.
